7-Day Great Wildebeest Migration River Crossing Safari
Built specifically for the Mara River crossings, with three nights in the northern Serengeti at Kogatende during the July to October crossing window.

River crossings are the single most requested sight in East African travel and the most frequently misrepresented. They happen at the Mara River in the far northern Serengeti and across the border in Kenya, principally between July and October, and they are genuinely unpredictable. Herds can mass at the bank for a full day and not cross. They can cross three times in an afternoon. No operator controls this.

What an operator can control is position and patience. This itinerary puts you in the Kogatende sector for three nights, which is the only realistic way to give yourself multiple attempts, and uses a private vehicle so that you can sit at a crossing point for hours without other guests wanting to move on.

Kogatende is four to five hours from Seronera by road, which is why shorter itineraries cannot include it credibly. We reach it either by an internal flight or by a full transfer day north through the park, depending on your preference and budget.

Even in a poor crossing year, the northern Serengeti in season holds enormous herd concentrations, resident predators drawn to them and the wooded Lamai wedge north of the river. The trip does not depend on a single event to be worthwhile, and we would rather you booked it understanding that.

Planning your trip

Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 7 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.

Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.

In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Karatu

A relaxed departure from Arusha with a stop at Lake Manyara or Mto wa Mbu, arriving in Karatu in the afternoon. This short first day sets up an early start for the long drive west.

Day 2: Karatu to the central Serengeti

Through Lodoare Gate, across the highlands and down onto the plains past Oldupai Gorge, entering the Serengeti at Naabi Hill.

Game drive into the Seronera valley, arriving at camp in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Central Serengeti to Kogatende

A long northward game drive through the Serengeti, four to five hours of driving broken by sightings, watching the habitat change from open plains to the wooded, hillier north.

Arrive in the Kogatende area in the afternoon and take a first drive along the river lines to assess where the herds are massing.

Day 4: Full day on the Mara River

A full day working the crossing points with a picnic lunch in the vehicle so that you never have to leave a building herd to return to camp.

Crossings are unpredictable. The day is spent reading herd behaviour at the bank, moving between known crossing points and waiting. Crocodile and resident predator activity along the river is substantial regardless.

Day 5: Second full day north

Another full day, either at the river again if herds are massing or across into the Lamai wedge north of the Mara, where the country is more wooded and the game less visited.

Two full days at the river is what converts a crossing from a hope into a reasonable probability.

Day 6: Kogatende to the crater highlands

A morning drive south through the park, or an internal flight if booked, returning across the plains to the crater highlands.

Overnight at a Karatu or crater rim lodge.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha

First light descent for the crater floor game drive, with lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs, then the ascent and transfer to Arusha, arriving in the evening.

Accommodation

Six nights on full board, with three of them in the Kogatende area of the northern Serengeti. Camps there are almost all seasonal mobile camps, set up for the crossing months and dismantled afterwards.

Mobile camps in the north are comfortable, with proper beds and en-suite facilities, and they exist because no permanent infrastructure could be positioned that close to a river whose crossing points shift. Booking early matters here more than on any other itinerary; the good northern camps sell out many months ahead for August and September.

FAQs

Will I definitely see a river crossing?

No, and be sceptical of anyone who says otherwise. Crossings are unpredictable and depend on herd position, rainfall and behaviour on the day. Three nights at Kogatende with a private vehicle gives you a strong chance, which is the honest maximum any operator can offer.

What months should I travel?

Late July through to early October is the reliable window, with August and September the peak. June is usually too early and late October risks the herds having moved back south.

Should I fly to Kogatende instead of driving?

It saves most of a day each way and many guests do it. The counter argument is that the northward drive through the park is itself a good game viewing day. We quote both and let you choose.

How far in advance should I book?

For August and September, eight to twelve months. Northern mobile camp capacity is genuinely limited and the best positioned camps are the first to fill.

Will I see the big five on this trip?

Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.

Is a private vehicle included?

Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.

What should I pack for a safari?

Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.

How much should I budget for tips?

Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.

How far in advance should I book 7-Day Great Wildebeest Migration River Crossing Safari?

For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Yes. Every itinerary we publish is a starting point. Days can be added or removed, accommodation tiers changed, internal flights substituted for road transfers, and extensions to Zanzibar or the southern parks attached. Tell us the constraint and we will build around it.
