3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Trio
Three northern circuit parks in three days without the long Serengeti drive: Tarangire’s elephants, the Ngorongoro Crater floor and Lake Manyara’s forest and lake shore.

This itinerary is built for travellers who want variety rather than distance. All three parks sit within a compact area west of Arusha, which means the driving between them is measured in tens of minutes rather than hours, and every day is a genuine game viewing day.

The three parks are deliberately different from one another. Tarangire is dry country baobab and elephant. Ngorongoro is an enclosed caldera with exceptional density. Manyara is groundwater forest, escarpment and alkaline lake. Seeing them consecutively makes the contrasts obvious in a way that a single park stay never does.

Karatu serves as the base for both nights, which removes packing and repacking from the schedule. It sits between Manyara and the crater gate, so day two starts early and day three starts comfortably.

The clear alternative is the three day Serengeti express, and the choice between them is straightforward. If you want the Serengeti plains and are willing to spend a day driving to reach them, take that one. If you want three distinct habitats, more game drive hours and less time in transit, take this one.

Planning your trip

Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 3 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.

Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.

In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire, overnight Karatu

Depart Arusha at 07:00 and reach Tarangire mid morning for a full day on the northern river circuit. Dry season herds concentrate along the permanent water, and the baobab woodland along the escarpment gives the park its distinctive look.

Picnic lunch at a river viewpoint, then a late afternoon exit and transfer through Mto wa Mbu and up the escarpment to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater floor, overnight Karatu

Early breakfast and 06:00 departure for Lodoare Gate. Cross the highland forest, stop at the rim viewpoint, and descend the Seneto road for six hours on the crater floor.

The circuit covers the Lerai Forest, Gorigor and Mandusi swamps and the Munge stream, with lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs. Ascend in the mid afternoon and return to the same Karatu lodge, arriving in good time for the evening.

Day 3: Lake Manyara, return to Arusha

Descend the escarpment after breakfast and enter Lake Manyara through the groundwater forest, where spring fed canopy supports baboon troops and blue monkey.

The drive works south along the lake shore and floodplain, with strong birding throughout and a picnic lunch at the hippo pool. You exit in the early afternoon and transfer back to Arusha, arriving late afternoon.

Two nights in the same Karatu lodge on a full board basis. Staying put for both nights is a deliberate choice: it saves an hour of packing and transfer each morning and lets you settle in properly.

Lodge tiers run from tented camps through comfortable mid-range properties with pools and gardens to premium coffee estate lodges. Crater rim upgrades are available for the night before the crater day if you want the shortest possible morning drive.

FAQs

Should I choose this or the 3-day Serengeti express?

Take this one if you want three habitats, more game viewing hours and less driving. Take the Serengeti express if the endless plains are specifically what you came for and you accept a full day of transfer to reach them.

Is the order of parks fixed?

Largely, because the crater is best done on a full day from Karatu and Manyara works well on the return leg. We can reverse Manyara and Tarangire if your arrival timing makes that easier.

Can I add a Maasai village visit?

Yes, most easily on day three or as an add-on near Mto wa Mbu. It carries a community fee. We work with established bomas that handle visits properly rather than as a staged performance.

How many hours a day are spent in the vehicle?

Between six and nine, but most of that is game driving on park tracks rather than road transfer. Day two is the longest because of the crater descent and ascent, and it is also the most rewarding.

Will I see the big five on this trip?

Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.

Is a private vehicle included?

Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.

What should I pack for a safari?

Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.

How much should I budget for tips?

Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.

How far in advance should I book 3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Trio?

For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Yes. Every itinerary we publish is a starting point. Days can be added or removed, accommodation tiers changed, internal flights substituted for road transfers, and extensions to Zanzibar or the southern parks attached. Tell us the constraint and we will build around it.
