8-Day Family Adventure Safari (Tarangire, Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro)
The northern circuit paced for families, with shorter driving days, lodges with pools, and activities beyond game drives to keep younger travellers engaged across eight days.

Safaris fail with children for predictable reasons: driving days that are too long, back to back game drives with no variety, and lodges with nowhere for a child to burn off energy. This itinerary is built to avoid each of those.

Driving days are shortened by adding nights rather than removing parks. Where the standard circuit does Karatu to Seronera in one long push, this version breaks the journey. Every lodge selected has a pool and space to move around. Game drives are structured as morning and late afternoon outings with a midday break, rather than full days in the vehicle with a picnic.

Variety is built in deliberately. The Lake Manyara treetop canopy walkway, a Mto wa Mbu bicycle ride through the banana plots, a visit to a Maasai boma where children meet children, and the option of a short guided nature walk all break up the wildlife viewing. Children who have something to do stay interested in the animals for longer.

Age matters. Most camps accept children from around six, some from twelve, and a few have family units with connecting rooms. Crater descents and long game drives suit children from about eight upwards. We will be honest with you about what works for your family鈥檚 ages rather than selling you an itinerary that will not.

Planning your trip

Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 8 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.

Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.

In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Collection from Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to an Arusha lodge with gardens and a pool. A deliberately easy first day to recover from the flight before any early starts.

Afternoon at leisure, with a short walk or a swim, and an evening briefing on the week ahead.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire

A mid morning departure rather than a dawn start, reaching Tarangire before lunch. An afternoon game drive on the river circuit, where the elephant herds are the easiest large mammals for children to spot and stay engaged with.

Overnight at a lodge in the Tarangire area with a pool.

Day 3: Tarangire to Lake Manyara

A morning game drive in Tarangire, then a short transfer to Lake Manyara. The treetop canopy walkway in the groundwater forest is the afternoon activity, a suspended walk through the canopy that most children enjoy considerably more than another drive.

Overnight in the Mto wa Mbu or Manyara area.

Day 4: Mto wa Mbu and transfer to Karatu

A morning bicycle tour or walk through the irrigated banana and rice plots at Mto wa Mbu, meeting farmers and seeing how the Rift Valley floor is cultivated.

Short afternoon transfer up the escarpment to Karatu, arriving with time to swim before dinner.

Day 5: Karatu to the central Serengeti

The longest driving day of the trip, broken by the crater rim viewpoint and a stop at Oldupai Gorge. Entry at Naabi Hill and a game drive into the Seronera valley.

Arrival at camp in the late afternoon. Camps here brief families carefully on moving around after dark.

Day 6: Full day central Serengeti

Morning and late afternoon game drives with a return to camp for lunch and a rest through the hottest hours, rather than a full day in the vehicle.

Kopje circuits and the Seronera river course give the best chance of lion and leopard.

Day 7: Serengeti to the crater highlands

A morning game drive as you exit east, then the transfer across the plains to the crater highlands with a Maasai boma visit arranged on the way, where children usually engage far more directly than adults expect.

Overnight in Karatu or on the crater rim.

Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater and departure

An early descent for the crater floor game drive, kept to the more productive circuits so that the day does not overrun young attention spans, with lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs.

Ascend in the early afternoon and transfer to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.

Accommodation

Seven nights on full board in properties selected for family suitability: pools, gardens, family rooms or connecting units, and staff used to children.

Inside the Serengeti the options are more limited, and we will tell you clearly which camps accept your children鈥檚 ages. Some excellent camps have a minimum age of twelve, and we would rather move you to a slightly different property than have your family arrive somewhere that cannot accommodate them.

FAQs

What is the minimum age for this safari?

We generally recommend six and above, and eight or above gets substantially more out of it. Below six the driving days are hard and many camps will not accept the booking. Tell us your children鈥檚 ages and we will build around them honestly.

Are the game drives too long for children?

Not as structured here. We use morning and late afternoon drives with a midday break rather than full days with a picnic, which is the standard adult pattern. The exception is the crater day, which we keep as tight as the sightings allow.

Is it safe to bring children on safari?

Yes, with sensible precautions. Camps brief families on movement after dark and escort guests to tents. The genuine risks are sun, dehydration and malaria rather than wildlife. Discuss prophylaxis with your doctor well before travel.

Can we have our own vehicle?

Yes, it is included. A private vehicle matters more for families than for anyone else, because you can turn back early, stop when someone needs the toilet, and let children talk without irritating other guests.

Will I see the big five on this trip?

Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.

Is a private vehicle included?

Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.

What should I pack for a safari?

Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.

How much should I budget for tips?

Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.

How far in advance should I book 8-Day Family Adventure Safari (Tarangire, Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro)?

For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Yes. Every itinerary we publish is a starting point. Days can be added or removed, accommodation tiers changed, internal flights substituted for road transfers, and extensions to Zanzibar or the southern parks attached. Tell us the constraint and we will build around it.
