Wildlife Safari
2-Day Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Explorer
Lake Manyara is a narrow park pressed between the Rift Valley wall and the lake itself, and that geography is what makes it interesting. Within a few kilometres you pass from dense groundwater forest fed by springs at the base of the escarpment, through acacia woodland, to open floodplain and alkaline lake shore. Few parks in Tanzania change habitat so quickly.
The forest section holds large troops of olive baboon and blue monkey, and the birdlife throughout is exceptional, with silvery-cheeked hornbill in the canopy and, when water levels suit, flamingo, pelican and stork on the flats. Manyara鈥檚 tree climbing lions are genuinely present but should be treated as a bonus rather than an expectation.
Pairing Manyara with Ngorongoro rather than Tarangire suits travellers who want habitat and birdlife variety over sheer elephant numbers, and it shortens day one considerably, since Manyara鈥檚 gate is only about ten minutes from the Karatu road.
Day two follows the standard crater pattern: early departure from Karatu, first light descent, six hours on the floor under NCAA allocation, and an afternoon return to Arusha.
Planning your trip
Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 2 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.
Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.
In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Lake Manyara, overnight Karatu
Depart Arusha around 07:30 and drive west through Makuyuni to Mto wa Mbu, reaching Lake Manyara gate in about two hours. You enter through the groundwater forest, where the springs at the base of the escarpment support a canopy quite unlike the surrounding dry country.
The game drive works south along the lake shore through acacia woodland and onto the floodplain, with a picnic lunch at the hippo pool viewpoint. Birdlife is the consistent feature throughout.
You exit in the late afternoon and climb the escarpment to Karatu, roughly 45 minutes away, for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater floor, return to Arusha
Early breakfast and departure at 06:00 for Lodoare Gate. After the rim viewpoint you descend the Seneto road for six hours on the crater floor, covering the Lerai Forest, the swamp margins and the Munge stream, with lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs.
Ascend mid afternoon and return to Arusha, arriving early evening.

Accommodation
One night full board in Karatu. The same lodge range applies as on our other short safaris, from well run tented camps through comfortable mid-range lodges to premium coffee estate properties.
Because day one at Manyara finishes earlier than a Tarangire day would, guests on this itinerary usually arrive at the lodge with daylight to spare, which is worth factoring in if you value an afternoon by the pool over maximum game drive hours.
FAQs
How does Lake Manyara compare with Tarangire?
Manyara is smaller, greener and much stronger for birds and forest primates. Tarangire is drier, more open and far better for large elephant herds. Neither is superior; they simply reward different interests.
Will I see flamingos?
It depends entirely on water level and salinity, which vary year to year. In good conditions the flats hold very large numbers. In dry years the lake retreats and flamingos are distant or absent. We will tell you the current situation honestly at the time of booking.
Are the tree climbing lions reliable?
No. They are a real behaviour in Manyara but sightings are occasional rather than routine. Treat them as a bonus. Anyone marketing them as a certainty is overselling.
Can I add the treetop canopy walkway?
Yes. It is a suspended walkway through the groundwater forest canopy, takes about an hour and carries a separate fee. It fits comfortably into day one and is popular with families and birders.
Will I see the big five on this trip?
Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.
Is a private vehicle included?
Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.
What should I pack for a safari?
Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.
How much should I budget for tips?
Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.
How far in advance should I book 2-Day Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Explorer?
For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.
Can this itinerary be customised?
Yes. Every itinerary we publish is a starting point. Days can be added or removed, accommodation tiers changed, internal flights substituted for road transfers, and extensions to Zanzibar or the southern parks attached. Tell us the constraint and we will build around it.
